10 Tips to write an Impressive Cover Letter

Posted On October 3, 2022

Your cover letter is often the first impression you give a potential employer - think of it like a strong handshake. This is your chance to say why an employer needs you in their team. Your goal is for the employer to want to find out more about you, by reading your CV and securing an interview where you can meet to determine if this is the right fit for both of you.

As recruiters we read a lot of cover letters, and whilst some do their job in highlighting an applicant’s skills and potential, others feel like they are mass generated from a generic template and do nothing to benefit an individual’s employment prospects.

Follow our 10 tips to create an Impressive Cover Letter:

1.       Check your current contact details – ensure they are correct.

2.      Start by addressing the employer/recruiter directly. If you can personalise your letter using their name, the person is much more likely to read on. (If you don’t know who to address your letter to, give the company a quick call and find out.)

3.      Start strong, your first sentence is important, so make it a good one. Why are you applying for the role?

4.     Demonstrate you know a bit about the company and your reasons for wanting to join their team.

5.      Make it easy for your employer/recruiter. Spell it out for them by relating your skills and attributes to their requirements detailed in the Job Description. Include any additional skills and qualities., sharing what you plan to bring to this role?

6.     Be positive, don’t mention any weaknesses or shortcomings, focus on what you have achieved and can bring to the role.

7.      Add some personal details if you believe it will add value to your overall application.

8.     Keep it to the point, your cover letter should be a short summary rather than your life story

9.     Finish your letter by reconfirming your interest in the position and asking them to get in touch “I am excited to explore this position further and I welcome the opportunity to discuss this with you at your convenience.”

10.   Check for any spelling or grammatical errors before you send your letter – use your spell check and have a friend proof this for you.

If you can check these off your cover letter will be short, succinct and a strong representation of your attributes and qualities for the position you are applying for. Send it on its way along with your CV knowing you have made a positive first impression.
