Why you should never skip the reference in your recruitment

Posted On May 18, 2023

We are recruiting in a candidate short environment and this is challenging. You may be tempted to skip reference checks and make an immediate job offer to secure top talent.

Regardless of the employment market, reference checking should always be a crucial part of your recruitment strategy to confirm the candidate’s suitability for your role.

As an employer, the more information you have, the better the decision you can make. Learn more about making an informed recruitment selection using reference checking.

Why reference check?

1.   To verify that the person has the right skills and ability to do the job.

2.   To verify their previous work performance and understand why they left their previous role.

Method of your reference check
The best way to conduct reference checks is verbally. This provides the opportunity for you to introduce yourself, the reason for your call and the position you are recruiting for. This information allows the referee to provide a relevant response.

Ask open-ended questions and clarify any grey areas in the reference by probing further to fully understand a situation.

Note: If verbal reference checking is not possible, use email and encourage the referee to provide as much information as possible.

What to check

1.   You want to first verify the existing details provided by your candidate:

  • The referee’s role and relationship to the candidate
  • Duration of employment
  • Role and responsibilities

2.   Ability to perform the role
Ask about their strengths and weaknesses, and question their willingness and ability to learn.

3.   Punctuality, attendance and timekeeping
If there are any areas for concern here, probe further to understand the frequency and reasons.

4.   Attitude and fit within your team?
Learning about the attributes of your candidate can assist with both selection and onboarding.

  • How would the candidate’s personality be described?
  • Are they able to work autonomously and in a team?
  • How do they deal with pressure or stress?
  • In what working environment do they perform at their best?

Who to check with

Ideally the person the candidate currently reports to is your preferred referee. Depending on the candidate, this may not be possible. If the candidate is a student, you may be able to speak with a teacher or tutor. If the candidate is self employed, someone they have regular business dealing with would be able to provide this information.

PN Personnel recommends two reference checks to ensure you have enough information for you to make your informed selection.

Investing time into your reference checking is better than hiring the wrong person for your job.
