Secure your socials

Posted On June 1, 2023

Social media is a powerful tool for businesses, to communicate with your audience, promote your brand and product offering. With hackers, impersonators and scammers on the rise, I caught up with Social Media expert Lainey Te Whatu from Rocket Fuel Design who explains how to review and secure your social media accounts.

Ensure you have a secure set up.

“Start reviewing your socials by checking the security of your own social profile and admin settings.” Lainey recommends the following:

  • Include strong passwords for your socials, including numbers and symbols. Try using a password generator to keep them random.
  • Don’t use the same password across multiple accounts.
  • Use two factor authentication.
  • Include a recovery email and phone number, businesses should also note the details of who this is within your organisation.
  • Check mobile phone security. Many businesses manage socials via mobile phones, these also need to be secure, locked and password protected with fingerprint/Face ID verification.

Limit account use.
You need to know who has access to your business accounts. Review and remove anyone who does not need access (such as a former employee).

Have a social media policy.

No matter the size of your business, all members of your team need to know how best to interact with your company page including some best practice guidelines.

Team members with admin access need clear procedures for creating posts, approving posts, responding to comments and managing requests.

This may include advice such as:

  • Check out a profile before accepting a connection request
  • Don’t click on any dubious links
  • Recommendations for appropriate posting/comments relevant to your brand and business values

Your social media policy should include clear guidance as to who to speak to if they do encounter a problem.

Lainey also recommends small businesses need to ensure at least two people are admin of a social account, to protect their business data in case one of the two are unable to do so.

Actively monitor your accounts.
Ensure someone is responsible for monitoring your social accounts, this person needs to be aware of your brand’s social presence and posts, with access to edit and respond as required.
