Negotiating pay in your current job

Posted On July 7, 2022

You enjoy your current job but the cost of living is starting to bite? This blog explains how to approach discussions with your employer for a pay rise, and what you need to consider beforehand to achieve the best outcome.

Listen to my interview on the Mike and Gareth Breakfast show on More FM here or read on.

Schedule a meeting

Request a meeting, explaining the reasons you want to meet so your employer can also consider your current situation beforehand. Once you have a meeting date, prepare your research so you can present your reasons.

Make your case

Highlight your current and previous achievements in your role – you need to demonstrate to your employer what you have done for the business. Refer to your KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) in your job description. Focus on your work achievements and performance in your role, rather than personal reasons for wanting a raise.

Justify your worth

Communicate what you can offer so your employer can appreciate the merit in your request for a pay rise. Consider if you can:

  • Assume more responsibility
  • Offer additional skills
  • Improve efficiencies for the business
  • Increase revenue
  • Increase business growth

Have a figure in mind
Research current salaries in your field and read our previous
blog to know your worth.   Consider if you have had any salary increases in your current role, when you last had an increase and explain why you are requesting a pay rise at this time.

Negotiation
Be prepared to negotiate. Aside from your salary consider other benefits which would add value to your overall salary package? It could be flexible working arrangements, work from home options, other reimbursements or personal development opportunities.

Understand the reasons if you are declined.

If your employer denies your request, discuss with them the reasons why.
Businesses have also been hit by rising costs impacting their bottom-line, your employer simply may not be financially able to offer a salary increase to you at this time.

Another reason could be your employer may be looking for something more from you. Clearly defining goals and achieving them can give you a strong case for a pay rise in the future.
