Job hunting: check your social media profile BEFORE you apply.

Posted On November 8, 2021

Employers are looking. You may think an employer will not look you up on Facebook, but it is highly likely they will.

Your social media profiles have more impact than you think. As recruiters we often hear stories of employers reluctant to pursue an applicant because they have read or viewed a post on their social media account.

Here are my recommendations to manage your social media presence:

Google yourself
Change your search settings to private or Incognito so your results won’t be impacted by your search history. This means you will see what others would see if they searched for you. For best results, google using Firstname+Surname (using the + to join these together). Check the images which appear, so you can remove any inappropriate ones. It’s interesting what you find!

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the platform designed for professionals – you WANT to be found here. Ensure your profile settings allow others to find you, and check your profile details so you can be a LinkedIn All Star. Ensure your LinkedIn profile matches your CV.

Most employers view these as the insight into you as a person, and will be checking to see if there is any information which may damage your reputation such as:

  • Inappropriate posts, photos or videos
  • Opinionated or negative comments

Check your profiles and privacy settings. If your profile needs a tidy up, then do so.

Keep in mind, it is preferable to keep a profile open, a private profile or deleted profile may mean you have something to hide.

If you are actively looking give consideration to any new posts you publish, this can enhance your appeal to an employer. Create positive posts such as family time, outdoor pursuits, or volunteering.

As recruiters, we are the ideal mediator between yourself and a potential employer. We can assist in promoting and marketing not only your relevant skills and experience but also your attributes and personality. Vice versa, we can provide the additional information regarding a company’s history, brand, and reputation which you cannot find online, so you are prepared with all the information to explore your new role.

If you are looking for work or wanting a change, we are here to help. Get in touch with myself or the team at PN Personnel.
