Constructive feedback, how to take it and what to do with it.

Posted On August 18, 2022

Constructive feedback is defined as comments to assist an individual to achieve a positive outcome by helping to identify solutions to areas of weakness they may have. The purpose behind constructive feedback is not to be critical, but rather to help improve an individual with a solutions based approach.

As a job seeker, constructive feedback is important so you can understand the reasons why you were unsuccessful in securing a particular role and how by addressing these reasons you can improve preparations for your next job application.

Always ask for feedback

A good recruiter/employer will be able to provide honest and clear feedback for you. This will include:

  • Acknowledging strengths
  • Defining areas for improvement
  • Providing actionable steps for improvement

By knowing any shortcomings – means you are better prepared to present yourself to a future employer. You can play on your strengths whilst also acknowledging other areas to strengthen.

As a recruiter, we provide constructive feedback because we believe in you and want to assist in setting you up on a pathway for success.

Don’t take it personally

It can be easy to take constructive criticism to heart, but recognise it is being shared with you to benefit and support your long-term job prospects.

Listen to the feedback and do ask questions to clarify any areas you are unsure about.

Constructive feedback is an important part of your personal growth, and can be used as a positive.

“I realise I need to further develop in the area of X, Y and Z and I have taken X,Y and Z steps to upskill in this area.”

A response like this demonstrates to a prospective employer not only have you taken feedback on board, but you have taken the initiative to action this for your own benefit.

Make an action plan

Constructive feedback should be clear and actionable so you can take steps for improvement and personal development.

Give yourself some goals and work to achieve them such as:

  • Editing and tailoring your CV
  • Improving your computer skills
  • Practicing detailed responses highlighting your skills for your next interview
  • Responding quickly and clearly throughout the recruitment process
