The Great Retention vs Great Resignation

Posted On April 13, 2022

It’s been dubbed the Great Resignation in America, as workers quit their jobs. With borders reopening, predictions of our workers resigning for offshore opportunities are growing.

It’s already a shrinking employment market, with skilled labour shortages across many sectors. With unemployment sitting at a low of 3.1% in the Manawatu and 3.8% in New Zealand, further losses to our workforce will create challenges for business.

The flipside of resignation is retention, and now is the time to review your retention strategies to minimise potential loss to your business.

Know your staff

A one size fits all approach will not work to retain your staff. Each employee's drivers and motivations will be as individual as they are.

Our Drivers Assessment is a useful tool to understand the motivations and values of your staff. This information provides you with the knowledge as to what elements of their role they find most satisfying, and the area’s most meaningful. Use this information to develop a retention strategy to support these individual values.

Value your staff

Once you know your employee drivers, you can design your retention strategies to fit their drivers. This may include:

  • Specific training and development
  • Progression opportunities
  • Financial benefits or other bonuses
  • Team building opportunities
  • Recognition for a job well done

As the saying goes, a little thank you goes a long way.

Know yourself

Your employer branding is important as part of your retention. Businesses which continue to seek growth opportunities and develop their reputation within their respective sectors are attractive to current and prospective employees.

Word of mouth in the Manawatu is powerful and worth devoting time to your business reputation and employee strategies.
