Applying for jobs when you don’t meet all the criteria

Posted On June 12, 2024

At a glance the job sounds perfect, then you read the full job description and realise your experience doesn’t quite match the requirements outlined for the role. In most cases it is worth crafting your application for the role, tailoring your cover letter and CV to maximise your chances of progressing your application.

Consider these recent statistics from SEEK*.  33% of job seekers said they wouldn’t apply for a job if they didn’t meet all the selection criteria. However, 75% of employers surveyed by SEEK stated they would consider hiring someone who didn’t meet minimum requirements.

Commonly, businesses will craft a job advert and job description with their “perfect” person in mind. This is idealistic and there is no guarantee they will find their perfect person.

Should the perfect person not apply, the vacancy still exists, therefore applicants who can demonstrate skills relevant to the role should apply.

As a recruiter I know of many job seekers who have successfully secured roles with companies where they have not met all the criteria. We can help you weigh up your experience verses the requirements for the role.

Talk to your recruiter
Why? Because your recruiter will have the insight of a previous discussion with an employer and will have the understanding as to what is negotiable with regards to the job description criteria. You may have a skill or experience gap in one area, but you are likely able to bring another quality to the table which an employer is likely to value.

Here are three simple tips to applying for the position:

1.     Highlight what you do have and include your willingness to learn
Focus on your positives, the experience and skills you can bring, your enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

2.     Focus on your transferable skills
If you lack skills in a certain area, you are likely to have other skills you can demonstrate instead. Consider all your skills and focus on what you can bring to the role.

3.     Personalise your cover letter
A tailored
cover letter is important to capture the attention of the employer. Draw attention to the qualities you can bring to the role rather than the gaps. It’s equally important for a business to have an employee which aligns with the vision and values of the business and the way they like to work. After all, attitude is everything.  This is something we commonly hear.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

My advice would be to apply for jobs if you feel you would be able to perform 75% of the duties outlined, which leaves you 25% which you can learn. This can potentially even work in your favour, employers may not want applicants who know everything as they are less likely to be engaged long-term, possibly moving on quickly.

If you can demonstrate your commitment to the business and your willingness to learn and improve your skills to align with the requirements of the job this can be a positive for your application.

If you believe you have the motivation, aspiration and willingness to learn then I would encourage you to apply and see how you go. You cannot be considered for a job if you don’t apply. Remember, this is the model you are working to and don’t get discouraged by pushback – cast your net wide. You may be unsuccessful, but if this is the case always ask for constructive feedback so you can craft a stronger application next time.

If you are reading one of our current vacancies and feel you meet 75% of the criteria, the recruitment team and I welcome a discussion with you.
