Meals on Wheels
For the past 2 years the team at Palmerston North Personnel have been dedicating 2 staff every 6 weeks to provide assistance to the NZ Red Cross with their Meals on Wheels service.
We deliver to approximately 6-10 homes within the local city area which takes approximately 30 minutes to complete the run. This service, which has been operating since 1951, supports the elderly, ill and disabled people living at home who would otherwise struggle to provide healthy meals for themselves. Hot meals are delivered by volunteers every day all over our community and it is a very rewarding experience to be a part of.
As a thank you for being a part of this brilliant community service, NZ Red Cross recently held a thank you afternoon tea for all drivers. I represented Palmerston North Personnel at this afternoon tea and I was amazed and astounded at how many people were present that make up the Meals on Wheels drivers. We were introduced to Sonja de Lange, Humanitarian Services Manager, who gave us all an insight into the community support and fundraising that is accomplished not only in our region, but nationwide. We were then entertained by the Freyberg High School choir who sang a collection of songs from different eras, to which had everyone talking about where and what they were doing in their lives on these years. A very enjoyable afternoon was had by all.
We as a team very much enjoy giving our time to this service and should you be interested in becoming involved as a NZ Red Cross Meals on Wheels driver, please contact Lynne Grayson, Meals on Wheels Coordinator on (06) 356 8152. This is a great service that NZ Red Cross coordinate and being a part of it, even if only once every 6 weeks, is very satisfying. We have a team of 8 and therefore the time dedicated to this enjoyable duty is very minimal, and perhaps something your team could be a part of too. You just never know, one day you may require this service for whatever reason.
