Industry trends and Job Opportunities
With hundreds of jobs listed, what areas are screaming out for staff and what others are inundated? We take a look at current vacancies and sector trends.
Online employment leader SEEK recently listed their hard to fill industries
This looks at areas where industries are attracting suitable candidates versus industries that are struggling to attract the right people.
This is a NZ wide graph but from our own experience over the past year we have seen both similarities and differences from a Manawatu employment perspective.
On the list of hard to fill, Trades and Services, Manufacturing, Transport and Logistics along with Legal feature as hard to fill industries. From a local perspective we do have a shortfall of people skilled in these areas. Manawatu as the logistics hub of the North Island consistently has a need to attract staff in roles ranging from warehousing and distribution to pickers and packers and production team leaders.
Some of these hard to fill roles are also reflected in Immigration NZ’s list of long-term skill shortages, this is particularly true for trades such as electricians, diesel and automotive mechanics.
Similar to the SEEK data, we have seen fewer opportunities in IT at present. Conversely, we have had a number of marketing and communications opportunities, through our partnering with CEDA, the Central Economic Development Agency, who are rapidly building their team of professionals to lead and drive growth and business for the Manawatu.
Industry trends are valuable because it can assist employees looking to move in their careers or transition to another area of expertise. You might be wanting to take on some study, or an apprenticeship, and an understanding of areas requiring staff means a better chance of securing a job in this area if you do decide to upskill.
If you are an experienced Secretary or EA, you may want to consider upskilling as a Legal Secretary, so far this year we have had a couple of full time opportunities arise, and feedback from our industry contacts are telling us the need is there.
