Go back to basics to engage employees
Whilst technology and changing work habits have made the workplace more diverse, as this article from the Entrepreneur explains, it is the old-fashioned approaches to work which are proving to be relevant and imperative in engaging employees and for business success.
These can be summarised in four steps:
1 – Face to face interactions/meetings are best
The most effective way to engage your employees and add value to your overall business is via face to face communication, in person. Nothing beats meeting person to person, face to face, whether it be employee/employer relations, employees working together or employee/customer relations.
2 – Basic benefits trump gimmicks or extras
When considering an employee package and benefits, an American study found paid leave and health entitlements were the most valued by employees as opposed to alternative company perks such as gym memberships, an office coffee machine or company lunches. The example used was of a company given a generous bonus to all staff, however this backfired as staff viewed it as an entitlement not a recognition of work. It meant more to the employees to receive individual appreciation and feedback for work they had done, a little thank you can go a long way.
3 – Invest in Training
“An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest”, Benjamin Franklin.
Allow employees the opportunity to develop and improve on existing skills and learn new ones and in return the employer will benefit from better performance and loyalty from the employee.
4 – Take the opportunity to build trust
A good employer will take the time to build trust with an employee, employees who feel they have the trust of their leader will perform better. A good employer/manager will build trust by having solid communication with an employee, share relevant information on the business, won’t micromanage (but will set clear work expectations and offer support if needed) and will praise for a job well done.
